About this place

The Nok culture, named after the village where its terracotta figures were first recognised by tin miners in 1928, flourished across central Nigeria from roughly 1500 BCE and produced some of the earliest known sculpture in sub-Saharan Africa. Plateau State is where that record is interpreted: the Jos collections hold the terracotta heads and figures, and the accompanying displays trace early iron working and settlement across the region.
