About this place
The Kofar Mata dye pits date from the early fifteenth century and are among the oldest indigo dyeing centres still working in West Africa. Dyers mix indigo, ash and potash in clay-lined pits and dip cloth by hand, producing the deep blue fabric long associated with Kano and the Sahara trade.
