About this place

Gidan Rumfa was built in the fifteenth century during the reign of Muhammad Rumfa and remains the official residence of the Emir of Kano. Its high earthen walls, gates and courtyards occupy a large walled compound in the old city. It is a working royal residence, so visits are normally external or arranged through the palace, and Friday processions are the best-known public occasions.
