Tunga Dutse Rock Paintings

Toro, Bauchi State · North East

Photograph: User-provided photograph · Used with permission

Rock paintings on granite surfaces near Toro, among the older records of human life in Northern Nigeria.

Why it matters

Rock paintings on granite outcrops in Bauchi State, part of the wider Saharan and Sahelian rock-art record.

History

At Tunga Dutse, figures and animal forms survive on sheltered rock faces west of Bauchi, where the plains begin to lift towards the Jos highlands. The images belong to a wider tradition of Saharan and Sahelian rock art that thins out southwards, and they are read as evidence of herding and hunting communities long before the emirates. The site is unenclosed and reached across open country.

Local stories and traditions

Community oral history associates the marked rocks with earlier occupants of the area; dating remains uncertain.
