Why it matters

Nigeria's first UNESCO World Heritage Site: a terraced cultural landscape in the Mandara mountains with a chief's palace, stone-paved ways and iron-smelting remains.

History

Inscribed in 1999, the Sukur Cultural Landscape in Madagali Local Government Area comprises the palace of the Hidi, terraced fields, stone-paved ways and remains of a former iron industry, in a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Cultural significance

The terraces, sacred sites and the Hidi's palace form a landscape still managed by the Sukur community.
