Wase Rock

Wase, Plateau State · North Central

A volcanic dome rising abruptly some 350 metres above the eastern plains, and one of Nigeria's great geological landmarks.

Why it matters

A volcanic plug rising abruptly from the plain in Plateau State, and one of the few documented breeding sites in Nigeria for the pink-backed pelican.

History

Wase Rock is a volcanic plug, the hardened core of an ancient vent left standing after softer surroundings eroded away. It rises sheer from flat country in eastern Plateau State and is visible for many kilometres. The rock is one of only a handful of breeding sites in Africa for the pink-backed pelican, and the sanctuary around it protects that colony.
