The Sallah horse procession of the Kano emirate, in which district heads ride in homage to the Emir.

Why it matters

The Sallah horse procession of the Kano emirate, one of the largest surviving equestrian ceremonies in West Africa.

History

Historical accounts trace the parade of mounted retainers to the military musters of the Hausa states and the Sokoto Caliphate period, later formalised as a Sallah homage. Individual elements — quilted horse armour, chain mail, court trumpets — descend from that earlier military use.

Cultural significance

Quilted horse armour, chain mail and court trumpets descend from the military organisation of the Hausa states and the Sokoto Caliphate period.

Local stories and traditions

The durbar is a homage ceremony, not a UNESCO-designated site. Where any UNESCO recognition is claimed for a specific element, it should be checked against UNESCO's own records.
