About this place
Records indicate Jaja, born in Igboland and rising through the Bonny house system, founded Opobo in 1870 after a rupture at Bonny and made it the dominant palm-oil port of the eastern Delta. Community oral history and colonial records agree on the outline of his removal, while accounts differ on the details of the negotiations that preceded it.
