About this place

The Larabanga Mosque stands in the village of Larabanga in the West Gonja District, close to the entrance road to Mole National Park. It is built in the Sudano-Sahelian style of whitewashed mud and projecting timber, and is regarded as the oldest mosque in Ghana and one of the oldest in West Africa. Tradition dates its founding to 1421, while some scholarly estimates place it later; it has been restored several times, including with support from the World Monuments Fund.
