It marks the boundary between the lowlands of the Volta Basin and the Mamprusi plateau to the north. Viewpoints are reached near the towns of Gambaga and Nakpanduri, and part of the scarp is protected as the Gambaga Scarp Forest Reserve, a recorded Key Biodiversity Area.
